KCPE 2018 results released - Fred Matiang'i releases 2017 KCPE exam results in Nairobi

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has today 21st November 2017 released this year’s Standard Eight national exam results.

Why KCPE Results 2017 came early

Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) said the fast release of the results was because of automated Optical Mark Recognition machines that fast-tracked the marking process. KNEC chairman George Magoha said the examination council bought 20 machines at a cost of Sh100 million to speed up the marking of scripts. According to Prof Magoha, acquisition of the automated Optical Mark Recognition machines, reduced the work force by up to 50 per cent.

The release comes almost a month earlier than previous years after marking was fast-tracked by optical machines.

All details of the 1,003,556 candidates have been computerised and captured in these scanners,” Knec Chairman George Magoha told the Nation early this month.

The candidates sat the examination in 28,566 centres, which were managed under tight security.

No cases of malpractice in the 2017 kcpe examinations

According to the CS, there were no cases of malpractice in the 2017 examinations

Dr Matiang'i said no single irregularity was reported in the tests that mark transition from primary to secondary school.

This means all the 1,003,556 candidates who wrote the exams will receive their results.

Of the 1,003,556 candidates, 9,846 scored 400 marks and above out of the possible 500.

The top candidate scored 455 marks out of the possible 500, a marked improvement as last year’s candidate scored 437 marks. “IEven  if  last year's top candidate was ranked, they would not even be in the top 20 category this year”, stated Matiang’i.

The number of students who scored 400 marks and above rose to 9,846 from 5,943 in 2016 as those who scored below 100 marks dropped from 6,747 in 2016 to 2,360 in 2017.

“We will place all children who got 400 marks and above in national schools, whether they are from public or private schools” Said Matiang’i.

There was improvement in performance for all subjects expect in Science, Social Studies and Religious Education, with the CS promising to look into the matter.
