BE A LEADER, NOT A MANAGER

Most people are put into leadership positions because they are great at their jobs and are quite intelligent. The problem is, while important, competency and intelligence don't speak to one important aspect of leadership - whether a person has the ability to inspire others to do their jobs exceptionally well. Many highly intelligent people feel more comfortable communicating information than they do trying to inspire people. To inspire people, you have to “put yourself out there” and risk being ignored or, worse, ridiculed. Most employees dislike managers but love leaders. Whether they realize it or not, people crave leadership because they want to do their job exceptionally well. Most employees know working hard will be good for their career and much more fun than just slogging through each day.

Remember, the difference between a manager and a leader is a manager tells people what to do and a leader inspires them to want to do it. You owe it to yourself, your co-workers, and the company you work for to be willing to put yourself out there and be a leader.
